The Half Million Dollar Acteva Review

You ever notice those glowing reviews in the middle of several complaints. That one positive review can start to alter your thinking and make you think, maybe this company is not so bad after all. What if that review was left by an employee of the company? If caught, that company can be subject to fines totally $500,000.

We stumbled across this one positive review for Acteva that was is 5 star at Revark.

At first we didn’t think too much about it, but then we decided to take a closer look. First the review starts off positive with the phrase, “Fantastic Investment.” Next the title ends with “my non-profit organization.” That is highly suspicious terminology  Next we look at the review its self. “I tried out the Acteva Express – Free for Free Events” hmm that sounds awfully like a sales pitch. Then the review ends with, “probably why I had a higher turn-out this year.” Sounds enticing. Then the review has to have 1 final sentence, “contemplating buying the Acteva Plus solution.” Hmm again sound likes a sales pitch.

Next we look at the ratings given. For starts each rating has to be selected from a list of options. The max ratings you can select is 5. See the 3 options that were given 4 stars, they we specially mentioned in the review as being top notch.

We decided to look and see if cherrypiper had any other reviews and sure enough there is 1 other review form the same period of 2 months ago and this review is for Acteva.

Now this 2nd review was posted for a different Acteva listing.

This listing again using a postive term as the 2nd word in the title. Now wait a minute this is a revie

w for Acteva Plus. The other review was for Acteva Express. The first review stated they wanted to try out the Acteva Plus solution. Both reviews mention the product by name too. Wait now Cherrypiper is an event planner? “I will surely recommend this solution to all my fellow event planners.” But wait, there is more, “It was a great investment!” Wait a second the other review used “investment” in its title too.

Let’s recap, We have 2 glowing reviews from the same user and during the same time frame. Both reviews use similar styles and phrases. Surely Acteva would not post fake reviews to counter negative reviews. This is such a common practice that just the other day we received a spam email offering to post fake reviews to combat negative reviews.

offer to post fake positive reviews

This is called astroturfing. See the definition of Astroturfing.

“Astroturfing refers to political, advertising, or public relations campaigns that are designed to mask the sponsors of the message to give the appearance of coming from a disinterested, grassroots participant. Astroturfing is intended to give the statements the credibility of an independent entity by withholding information about the source’s financial connection. The term is a derivation of AstroTurf, a brand of synthetic carpeting designed to look like natural grass.”

This is highly illegal and according to Pubcon Presentation by Alan Bleiweiss, the FTC can fine upto $500,000 and add your website on a government website as a serious offender. Alan Bleiweiss is a highly respected SEO and ORM expert.

No amount of fake reviews will cover up the fact that customers are complaining. The first step should be to address what is causing the complaints to be posted in the first place and rectify it. If you do not fix those issues, more complaints will be posted and you may end up having a whole site devoted to your company.
